Fixed-term contract with opportunity for further extension. This post is initially funded for 2 years at which point it is anticipated it becomes a permanent post.
Full Time position (37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday).

Purpose:
The Maritime Skills Commission and Cornwall Marine Network Ltd are pleased to be recruiting a Maritime Sustainability Skills Manager. This is a joint post, and the successful candidate will be based at Cornwall Marine Network offices in Falmouth.
The Maritime Sustainability Skills Manager will be employed under the European Social Fund (ESF) Skills Lab & Skills Store projects to develop and pilot green skills initiatives in the maritime sector, working with employers to address their skills needs as they transition to net zero and commit to environmental and ecological sustainability.
By doing so, the Maritime Sustainability Skills Manager will deliver against the Maritime Skills Commission’s key recommendations as set out in its Green Skills Position Paper (to be published on 21st June 2022), building on existing and emerging knowledge of gaps in current training provision to lead on the development of green add-on courses for the marine sector and accredited and non-accredited qualifications including Apprenticeships.
About the Maritime Skills Commission:
The Maritime Skills Commission (MSC) was established by Maritime UK and the Department for Transport to lead the sector’s work in ensuring the maritime sector has a pipeline of talented people to serve all parts of the sector covering shipping, ports, leisure marine, engineering, science, and professional services.
Among its key objectives, the MSC aims to understand the skills needs of the sector, including the effects of technological change, and to make recommendations for action; to ensure that no part of the sector suffers from serious skills shortages or skills gaps; and to ensure the sector has the apprenticeships and training provision it needs.
MSC is committed to weaving the green skills agenda through its updated Scheme of Work and, in June 2022, will adopt a Green Skills Position Paper, building on the findings of its workshop organised with industry at COP26 in Glasgow.

By the end of 2022 it is projected that CMN will have supported members to have delivered £500 million of added value to Cornwall’s economy.
CMN owns Maritime UK South West and is a member of Maritime UK and the Maritime UK Regional Cluster Council. In 2021, CMN partnered with the Maritime Skills Commission to commission a research piece on future maritime green skills and is now placed to create a new green skills development team based in Falmouth that will design, deploy and test new green qualifications with marine businesses prior to a national roll-out following qualification approval.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide the project management function for the Skills Lab and Skills Store projects and support the CMN ESF Director to meet project objectives, and contribute to progress reporting and promotion
- Be accountable and report progress to the Maritime Skills Commission in contributing to its green skills recommendations and associated Scheme of Work.
- Working within the project timeframe and budget, identify effective avenues to develop new training content and future-proof existing training content, including Apprenticeships, to equip the current and future workforce with the skills needed to deliver the net-zero transition.
- Provide line management of the Maritime Sustainability Curriculum Development Executive and provide support and direction to add to courses and training that serves the maritime industry’s net-zero and environmental sustainability objectives.
- Undertake a national survey of maritime businesses to gain a detailed understanding of their current and emerging green skills needs.
- Produce a comprehensive Matrix to map what is known of Green Skills for the maritime sector. This matrix will become a national resource and will identify gaps and inform the development of new/enhanced training courses
- Provide insight and technical advice to CMN teams as the company expands its green offering to ensure a joined-up approach with the interest of marine businesses at its core.
- Keep abreast of potential changes to the legislative, regulatory, and funding landscape in relation to the green agenda that may affect CMN and MSC’s operations.
- Represent CMN and the MSC at events and strategic groups.
- Participate in team development activity

Person Specifications
- Qualified to degree level or similar in a sustainability field
- Proven experience of leading or implementing skills initiatives
- Vision and passion for making a difference and improving economic and community prosperity.
- Strong business acumen
- Excellent organisational abilities.
- Outstanding communication and people skills.
- Passion and understanding of the maritime industry, environment and renewables
- Familiarity with MS Office and various business software (i.e. CRM).
- Team player, confident liaising with colleagues and external organisations
- Own, reliable car / transport with full clean licence to drive.
