Skills Support for Young People

Funded through the ESF funded CSW Skills Support for Young People contract Cornwall Marine Network was able to offer training courses to develop and improve the employability and vocational skills of young people aged 15 – 25 who were unemployed or at risk of disengaging with education or employment after leaving school. Participants were able to work towards a recognised qualification and get some experience to step onto the ladder of further study or employment… and have fun!

Developing Employability Skills Programme

Each programme includes IAG followed by tailored support of accredited training and non-accredited experiences including the BTEC WorkSkills employability qualification and a choice of other activity such as work placements, work trials and ‘have a go’ activities on business premises. The employability course is either delivered over 5 consecutive days or, for young people in education, one morning each week for 8 weeks and includes:

  • Managing Your Own Money
  • Personal Behavior for Success
  • Achieving Success at Interview
  • Applying for Jobs
  • Maintaining a Suitable Online Presence for Employment

Investigate Skills in the Marine Sector

As part of their school curriculum, young people aged 16 – 18 can investigate the skills marine businesses need for an able and talented future work force. During the 20 week programme, delivered one day a week on a schools premise, young people work towards a marine focussed vocational qualification, gain real work experience with a range of marine business across the sector and get some experience to step onto the ladder of further study or employment…and have fun!
