A message from our CEO Paul Wickes on the budget announcements:

We were encouraged that support to some businesses was extended in the budget, but the reality is the support measures fail to support too many of our members who have fallen through the cracks. The budget announced additional help for some self-employed not previously supported which is good, but others such as SME directors who take dividends still have not had any help. Cornwall’s demand for the Additional Restrictions Grant (ARG) exceeds the allocation it was given, meaning all recent businesses that were supported only gained grants at 50% of their entitlement. The government should base allocations on demand and respond to Cornwall’s unique and challenging business environment, with a proliferation of micro and SME businesses, rurality, reliance on the visitor economy (60% of marine in Cornwall is Leisure marine) and the major impact of having so many coastal towns, all of which put Cornwall at a major disadvantage when assessing our ability to survive and recover. We will be working closely with Cornwall Council to assess the economic impact of Plymouth gaining Freeport status to understand the pro’s and con’s for businesses in Cornwall, given the close geographic proximity.

However, the spirit and unity of Cornwall people will ensure we emerge together from the current challenges because that is what Cornwall does best, we help each other, so wishing a Happy St Piran’s Day to One and All.

Kind regards
Paul
CMN CEO
