Overview

The Outdoor Activity Instructor Level 3 Apprenticeship offers the perfect blend of adventure, skill development, and leadership training, designed to transform apprentices into a confident and capable outdoor instructor.

This apprenticeship provides hands-on experience in guiding children and adults through a variety of outdoor activities, from canoeing and climbing to archery and wildlife walks. Under the supervision of experienced professionals, the apprentice will learn how to prepare for sessions, maintain safety, and deliver engaging instruction that fosters new skills and personal growth in participants.

Over 12 to 18 months, the apprentice will develop build a strong foundation in outdoor education, backed by a recognized qualification. The role not only sharpens interpersonal and communication skills but also ensures that the candidate meet the high standards of safety and environmental respect.

Completion of this apprenticeship will lead to the opportunity to become a Registered Member of the Institute for Outdoor Learning, opening doors to career pathways such as Outdoor Activity Leader, Curriculum Developer, or even an Outdoor Learning Coordinator.

Occupational profile

To run a safe and enjoyable activity session. Prepare for the session but gathering information. Deliver the session, briefing, maintaining safety, providing on-going instruction. Meet session outcome, supporting participants with new skills and personal challenges. Close the session, handing over participants, return resources and equipment, log an issues. Respect the environment, show positive attitude.

Duration

The apprenticeship will typically take between 12-18 months to complete.

This apprenticeship standard is at Level 3.

Entry Criteria

  • We are looking for high quality candidates with good interpersonal skills and preferably Maths and English GCSE/Functional Skills.
  • 18+ years of age due to the nature of the work.
