Working with SKB Sails
SKB Sails manufactures upholstery mostly for yachts, but also deals with all sorts of boats from canoes to superyachts. The team build everything in house, which makes for high quality products and a highly skilled workforce.
Owner Nick Head was the first ever apprentice at Cornwall Marine Network back in 2002. Before Nick started his apprenticeship there were no recognised qualifications for Sailmaking, and Cornwall Marine Network worked with Nick and his then boss to develop a program as flexible as the manufacturing process itself.
“At the time there were no qualifications for sailmaking because its such a small trade, so to have a recognized course was something to say ‘you have served your time’. It was really important to be recognized.”
10 years on and Nick, with support from the Network, was able to purchase the business. A year later, Nick felt ready to get another pair of hands in the sail loft.
“CMN is great at getting the apprentices familiarised with the working day, making sure they are there on time and have their questions answered and all the training was done at the workplace, which makes a hell of a difference from doing it in the classroom”
SKB sails continues to grow and will be looking to CMN to help hire another apprentice in the future.
“Having a membership with Cornwall Marine Network means that someone’s always got your back if you have a query or need some advice. They always know someone who can help, and it’s nice to have a list of skilled individuals who you can call when you need to.”
