Skills Support for Young People

Skills Support for Young People

Cornwall Marine Network (CMN) was a supply chain partner in the Skills Support for Young People project managed by Careers South West (CSW). Between 2016 and 2019 CMN’s bespoke training provision successfully supported young people aged 15-24 Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET) or at risk of NEET to progress onto further education, an Apprenticeship or a job.

CMN delivered a training package of accredited courses (including BTEC, Performing Engineering Operations Level 1 and Industrial Environmental Awareness Level 2) and non-accredited delivery (site visits, work placements and employability training) in job centres and in local secondary schools 1-day per week over an academic year.

The aims of the project were to:

  • Address the increasing difficulties reported by local marine and manufacturing employers when trying to recruit young people with the right skills, attitudes and work ethics.
  • Improve the employability of young people NEET or at risks of NEET.
  • Reduce youth unemployment.
  • Address the growing skills shortages in the marine and manufacturing sectors at local and national levels.
  • Inspire and train young people, including in the marine technology smart specialisation field where additional jobs will be created
