As a training provider CMN provides personal and flexible training to company employees and apprentices in SMEs across all business sectors in Cornwall and the South West. Since 2005 we have successfully delivered a wide range of training programmes to more than 8,000 learners, supported the creation of more than 4000 new jobs, including nearly 1,400 new Apprenticeships and added over £430M value to the local economy.
As a Freelance Functional Skills Tutor you will support our team and business community to meet their skills and training needs; ensure we continue to drive improvement in our apprenticeship training service and ensure CMN continues to be recognised as a provider of training excellence for all our customers and learners.
Overview
As Freelance Functional Skills Tutor you will report to the Training Delivery and Quality Manager and form part of the CMN training team. You will have apprenticeship experience as well as a proven ability in teaching Maths, English and ICT to achieve high quality outcomes for learners whilst delivering year-on-year improvements in effectiveness and efficiency.
You will have the ability to work from your own initiative for teaching; coaching and providing additional support for Apprenticeship learners being supported by CMN. Your role will be to support the delivery team to ensure learner achievement and enable equality of opportunity for all learners to reach their full potential.
Responsibilities
- Delivery of Maths, English Reform and ICT Levels 1 & 2 to Apprenticeship learners
- Support CMN to secure a minimum 80% first-time pass rate in all Functional Skills at Level 2
- Plan and deliver the teaching of Functional Skills within funding dates and provide intervention where these will cause risk of a learner not achieving or not achieving in a timely fashion
- Provide clear, written audit trails of work undertaken to ensure learner management data remains current and updated
- Support the CMN team with invigilation procedures and processes
- Support the development of schemes of work, lesson plans and individual learning plans to continuously improve the quality of teaching, learning and assessment
- Provide advice and updates at team meetings, including inputting to standardisation meetings and the sharing of best practice
- Input into External Quality Assurance activities to support CMNs achievement of gaining low risk status with Awarding Bodies remains
- Undertake any other duties appropriate as agreed with the Senior Training, Quality and Safeguarding Manager

- Excellent Maths and English teaching strategies
- Experience in designing and developing curriculum for Maths and English
- Able to perform well under pressure
- Excellent time-management skills
- Passion for supporting people, processes and systems
- Good at multi-tasking and able to apply differentiation to support a range of learner needs
- Good IT skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- High level of commitment to improving people’s lives through learning
- Ability to convey information which needs careful explanation or interpretation
Essential Requirements:
- Suitably qualified Teacher (PGCE, Education and Training Award, L3 Teaching qualification)
- Assessors Award
- Demonstrable prior experience in teaching / assessing one or more of the above subject areas
- Ability and capacity to be flexible and consistent
- Experience of delivering training online and remotely
- Be based in Cornwall and Isles of Scilly or the South West of England
- Provide a DBS check (on appointment)
- Have completed or be willing to complete equal opportunities, safeguarding and Prevent training
Remuneration/ Hourly Rate: Competitive Day and Hourly rates
