Degree Apprenticeship in Marine Surveying

The Marine Surveyor Apprenticeship Standard is Well Underway!

Following concerns voiced by the National Workboat Association; that surveyors are getting somewhat ‘long in the tooth’ and the traditional routes into the profession have almost dried up, the industry has responded to this key skill shortage area. Without surveyors, the UK’s successful marine fleet cannot operate.

Richard Alan Cartwright, Chair of IMarEST Small Ships Group has led the way in the development of a new degree level Marine Surveyor Apprenticeship Standard. Led by Richard, a marine focussed trailblazer group, with representatives from industry, independent training providers and FE/HE institutions, have now progressed through the necessary stages to the point where the occupation standard for this new apprenticeship has been approved by the Institute for Apprenticeships (IfA). Whilst the profession of marine surveying is a very broad, with various specialist roles, the trailblazer group has focussed this Apprenticeship Standard on the general duties, professional standards and associated knowledge, skills and behaviours that cut across all categories, whether you are looking at a 10ft Mirror dinghy or participating in a class survey of a Cunard cruise ship or liner. The group realised that the core requirement and professional approach was the same, so long as they got the definitions right. They are now at the final stage of approval with the IfA; agreeing the end point assessment arrangements. This is great news as even now enquiries from employers are already rolling in as to when and how they can start candidates on the course.

We hope this exciting new development is of interest to you and can benefit our maritime community in Cornwall. Further information about the new degree level Marine Surveyor Apprenticeship Standard can be found here.
