Falmouth Harbour launches unique search for new CEO
A fantastic opportunity to work in a beautiful location and make a significant difference to Falmouth is being offered by Falmouth Harbour Commissioners (FHC),

A fantastic opportunity to work in a beautiful location and make a significant difference to Falmouth is being offered by Falmouth Harbour Commissioners (FHC), the statutory body responsible for managing the Trust Port of Falmouth harbour, in a nationwide hunt for a new CEO.

With a commercial and stakeholder engagement background, the new recruit will manage in excess of 16 square miles of harbour area which among its many uses is a busy commercial port, tourism hub and treasured natural environment.

As part of this they will oversee the business arms of FHC; Falmouth Pilot Services and Falmouth Haven which last year generated £3.4m turnover and are pivotal in supporting the wider economic, marine and leisure activities of Falmouth. Falmouth Pilot Services provides pilotage and launch services for commercial vessels visiting the Port, while Falmouth Haven has 600 deep water moorings and marina berthing for up to 100 vessels.

Carrie Gilmore, Chair of FHC, explains: “We are looking for someone who can build on our history and create a new and exciting vision for our future. This is a unique opportunity to contribute not just to Falmouth Harbour Commissioners, but to the economic and environmental sustainability of Falmouth and Falmouth port.

“In June 2020 FHC separated what has historically been a combined role of Chief Executive and Harbour Master and our Deputy Harbourmaster, Duncan Paul, was promoted internally to Harbour Master. We therefore do not have a specific requirement for our new CEO to have Harbour Master or maritime expertise – they will have a highly qualified Harbour Master to support them and as such we are very excited about the candidate opportunities this opens up.”

The new CEO will also represent the Port at the highest levels across the maritime sector, influencing the national maritime landscape and helping to shape the wider supply chain. Senior leadership experience, commercial and financial acumen, outstanding communication skills and a collaborative leadership style are just some of the qualities being sought and applications are being welcomed by candidates with experience in a variety of backgrounds, including maritime, marine, ports or leisure, or from a very different sector.

The opportunity follows the impending departure of Mark Samson who has long held the combined position of Harbour Master and CEO and retires at the end of the year.

Mark comments: “Leading such a diverse and pivotal organisation is incredibly interesting, challenging and rewarding. I am hugely privileged to have been employed in this role for such a long time. Falmouth harbour is a beautiful and special place to work, and I look forward to seeing it go from strength to strength under the helm of a new CEO.”
