Oceanic-Wave Ltd, incorporating Kernow Weather Team, is a not-for-profit weather, marine and environmental information organisation based in Cornwall.

Oceanic-Wave grew from the experience and community reach of Kernow Weather Team (KWT), which has been providing trusted local weather information to communities across Cornwall since 2017.

Together, we are developing the next stage of that work — bringing weather, land, coastal and marine information together so that people, businesses, researchers and organisations can better understand how changes in one environment can affect another.

From Moor to Shore

Weather does not stop at the coastline, and neither do the impacts of changing environmental conditions.

Heavy rainfall inland can affect rivers, agricultural run-off, drainage systems, beaches and eventually the sea. Coastal conditions can influence communities, marine activity and local businesses. Satellite observations can show us the bigger picture while measurements on the ground and in the water help us understand what is happening locally.

Oceanic-Wave aims to help connect those dots.

Our work is developing around a simple principle:

Land → Catchment → Coast → Sea

By combining weather information, environmental observations, marine data and Earth Observation, we want to make complex information easier to understand and more useful to the people who need it.

L2S – Land to Sea

Our current development concept is L2S – Land to Sea, a proposed proof-of-concept exploring how environmental changes and pollution can be followed from land and catchments through to the coast and marine environment.

The concept is being developed around areas including:

– rainfall and weather conditions

– agricultural and surface run-off

– river and catchment conditions

– water temperature and salinity

– coastal currents, waves and wind

– water-quality indicators

– sewage and pollution events

– satellite Earth Observation

– ground-based and marine measurements

Rather than replacing existing monitoring networks, our aim is to explore how different sources of information can be brought together to provide a clearer picture of what is happening between land and sea.

Potential users could include coastal communities, farmers and land managers, harbour and beach operators, environmental organisations, researchers, local authorities and other organisations responsible for coastal resilience and environmental management.

Built on Kernow Weather Team

Kernow Weather Team remains an important part of Oceanic-Wave.

KWT has built a large and engaged community by taking complicated weather information and explaining it in a way ordinary people can understand and use.

That same approach sits behind Oceanic-Wave.

Data is valuable, but it becomes far more powerful when people understand what it means, why it matters and what they may need to do next.

Through KWT we already understand the importance of communication, preparedness and trusted local information. Oceanic-Wave allows us to take that experience further into the marine and environmental sectors.

Research, Collaboration and Innovation

Oceanic-Wave is developing through conversations and collaboration with organisations across the marine, environmental, research, technology and space sectors.

Our journey has included involvement with the UK Space Agency Accelerator and connections across Cornwall’s growing space and marine technology networks.

This has helped us explore how Earth Observation and space-derived information could complement local monitoring rather than treating satellite and ground-based information as separate systems.

We are particularly interested in partnerships that can help us test ideas in real-world environments and establish where Oceanic-Wave can add genuine value alongside existing monitoring programmes.

Funding and Partnership Opportunities

We are actively exploring grant funding, research partnerships, pilot opportunities and appropriate investment to help move Oceanic-Wave and L2S from concept into practical testing.

We are not looking to build technology simply for the sake of technology.

Our aim is to identify genuine gaps, work alongside organisations already collecting valuable information and develop practical solutions that can help communities and decision-makers better understand changing environmental conditions.

Our Vision

Our long-term vision is for Oceanic-Wave to become a trusted place where weather, environmental, coastal and marine information can be connected and understood.

From what falls on the land…

to what travels through our catchments…

to what reaches our beaches and coastal waters…

and what satellites can see from above.
